In the 1950s Chrevolet, Ford, GM, and International Harvester made school bus chassis. Ford generally was the dominant manufacturer and provided chassis to all school bus body plants/

In the 1950s there were nine school bus body manufacturers, with Superior Coach operating two plants. Today the field is down to Blue Bird, IC, and Thomas, all of which are owned by or affiliated with a chassis manufacturer.
