The Saint Paul Public Schools provides transportation service to students who are attending Saint Paul Public Schools and programs, or who are attending non-public and charter schools that are located within the City of Saint Paul. Transportation is provided to students who meet eligibility requirements contained in the Board of Education Policy 707.00 Eligibility for Student Transportation.

During the 2005-2006 school year the District projects transporting 41,190 students including __________ students attending Saint Paul Public Schools and programs and 3.373 students attending non-public schools located within the City of Saint Paul.

Under Minnesota Statutes and Federal laws the School District is required to provide specialized transportation services to students whose handicapping condition requires individualized transportation services.

Minnesota Statutes grant charter schools the option of requesting transportation service from the resident school district or providing transportation themselves and collecting aide directly from the State of Minnesota. The resident school district must provide transportation service within the school district boundaries if requested by the charter school. The resident school district is not required to provide transportation service to non-resident students attending charter schools located within the district boundaries.

The Saint Paul Public Schools provides student transportation service to:

  • 8 Early Education Special Education (preschool) sites
  • 52 Public elementary schools
  • 7 Public Community Kindergarten programs for 4 year olds
  • 23 Non-public elementary schools
  • 25 Public secondary schools
  • 3 Non-public secondary schools
  • 9 Special education programs located outside of Saint Paul
  • 5 Mental health or chemical dependency treatment programs
  • 2 Charter Schools
  • 7 full time vocational training sites for special needs students
  • 7 Public Learning Readiness Programs
  • 7 Early Childhood and Family Education Programs
  • The Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf at Faribault, MN
  • The Minnesota State Academy for the Blind at Faribault, MN

During the 2005-2006 school year, the last year for which full information is available, the Saint Paul Public Schools:

  • Was No. 2 nationwide for large urban school districts in daily riders per school bus
  • The 2005-2006 School Bus Fleet Magazine survey of the 100 largest school districts indicates that Saint Paul is the 31st largest school district in the number of students transported, but is the 64rd largest school district in the number of buses used to transport those students!
