Controling Speed Around Schools
Speed Trailer 1.JPG
The Transportation Department utilizes a Kustom Signals SMART (Speed Monitoring Awareness Radar Trailer) trailer to rmake the motorist and the community aware of vehicle speed near schools and school zones. The radar speed trailer is placed on streets near schools and at other locations where a concern exists about potential speed issues. The trailer has a large electronic display which shows the speed of the approaching motorist and flashes the vehicles speed when it exceeds

a pre-set limit.

A visit from the SMART radar trailer has proven to reduce speed for an extended period. The trailer is also utilized by the Saint Paul Police Department during the summer months when school is not in session.

The contract for transportation service with our school bus contractors requires that school buses will operate with extreme caution and not exceed a speed of 15 miles per hour while entering, or traveling through, a school bus laoding and

unlaoding area at a school site.

Transportation Safety staff monitor school bus driver compliance with his requirement and utilize Kustom Signals Giant Display Boards ® to make school bus drivers aware of their speed in school zones. The Boards, which are set up in the rear of safety vehicles and which interface with our Golden Eagle® radar units, are visible for at least a block to an approaching bus and make drivers aware of speed as they approach the school.
